This weekend I played the role of the food manufacturer: I manufactured (printed) my own tortilla chips, to go along with the freshly made guacamole that my 9 year old daughter made.
I wanted oil-free, low salt, baked tortilla chips, made with white corn. Something that’s pretty much impossible to find in a supermarket.
And I wanted tortilla chips that didn’t leave that slightly greasy aftertaste. You know what I’m talking about if you eat any pre-made chips.
So the only way to have those types of chips was to make them myself.
Normally I wouldn’t bother, as it’s quite the hassle. Making the dough, rolling it out very thin (which is difficult for a lot of people, including me), cutting the chips ... = hassle.
But I have a Foodini in my kitchen. With Foodini, the task of making my own tortilla chips customized to my specifications wasn’t so daunting at all. As a matter of fact, it was surprisingly easy!
I made my own dough, consisting of white corn flour, a bit of white flour (as I ran out of corn flour – sometimes you have to get creative in the kitchen and not stick so hard to a recipe), water, and a dash of salt. That’s it. No additives. No preservatives. No palm oil as found in most chips. No oil at all. No excessive amount of salt.
Just my ingredients. I became the food manufacturer as Foodini – which is really a mini food manufacturing kitchen appliance – printed my chips. I went for the standard triangle shape – a proven good dipping shape. And we printed just the amount we needed: no food waste.
The result was brilliant! Great tasting, crunchy, fresh chips. All guilt-free as I knew exactly what was in them.
As I sat and enjoyed our freshly made chips and guacamole with my family, I thought about all the other things I buy packaged that I will be able to print. Customized ingredients, freshly made, easy to make yourself. That’s one of the reasons we created Foodini.
Added bonus: no plastic packaging waste in the form of tortilla chip bags as sold in supermarkets.
